I consider the use of Augmentative-Alternative Communication early on in the process and implement it as soon as possible if appropriate. I like for the children to feel that they have a successful way to communicate while we work on the speech production targets. This reduces frustration for both the child and the parents. Our facility is working on ways to provide more frequent treatment sessions weekly for these patients in a manner that maximizes their insurance coverage.
Parents are involved every step of the way, particularly at the beginning of treatment. I want them to understand the goals we are addressing so that we are "on the same page" about the child's progress. I think it can be challenging, but helpful, for parents to see just how difficult it can be for their child and how frustrating it can be to have trouble communicating efficiently. I love for parents to see how successful their children can be when they are provided with the appropriate treatment! It is empowering for child and parent.
I have utilized high tech/dedicated devices with children with CAS. We incorporate device use into the sessions along with speech production targets. I encourage families to utilize the device at home when the child is unable to communicate clearly, so that the child does not become overly frustrated and stills feels empowered in communicating.
