I have the pleasure of working with clients who have childhood apraxia of speech, and being able to see their amazing growth during our sessions. I am trained in DTTC but I use strategies from other approaches as well, as I understand each individual child has a different learning style. My sessions are fun, engaging, and play-based. I incorporate parents' knowledge of their child into each session. I help my clients to have success with words and sentences, and I love seeing their confidence grow as their communication blossoms.
My clients' parents are directly involved in choosing target words to use in therapy. I enjoy discussing possible syllable shapes, consonants, and vowels that might work for their child based on our assessment. Then, with that knowledge, we look together at names, commands, protests, actions, and interests which are motivating to their child and would match the types of words we are targeting currently. I also involve parents in my sessions by explaining the "why" behind each activity, target word, and cue I am using. I believe this is important in both empowering the parent and helping the child's progress, as parents are able to report back on their observations and new words they hear at home. There is also value in connecting parents with community information and apraxia resources. I often learn about additional resources from parents and love sharing these with others!
I use both low tech and high tech AAC options for multiple of my clients. These range from printed picture icons to AAC apps on an iPad. I work with the parents to determine if and when AAC could benefit their child, and we incorporate this alongside our work in improving verbal speech.
