Based on the child's unique phonetic/phonemic inventory and stimulable sounds, a small set of specific words/phrases is created and used to improve motor planning/programming through practice. Principles of motor learning support increased practice, including increased sessions and practice of targets during sessions. DTTC offers a hierarchy of support for the child to learn and practice accurate movements through direct imitation, simultaneous production, slowed rate, and other visual/tactile cues as needed. Feedback gives the child information about accuracy and how to change their movement for accurate production, reducing the rate and type of feedback over time. AAC is simultaneously introduced to increase functional communication and decrease frustration while the child improves verbal communication.
Parent involvement is an integral part of the child's success! Caregivers are given resources to help understand CAS and participate in support groups. Throughout the therapy process, collaboration with parents will determine a list of appropriate practice words/phrases. Parents are encouraged to be present and participate in therapy sessions, and learn to facilitate carryover practice of acquired words at home. Support is available as parents advocate for the child's access to services and increased communication opportunities at home, at school, and in the community.
I have used a variety of low-high tech AAC, including sign language, PECS, Core boards and other picture schedules/visual communication aids, switches, voice output devices, dedicated AAC and iPads with ProLoQuo, TouchChat, and LAMP. I use a multimodal approach to support the child's preferred mode of communication and introduce visual communication/AAC early to increase functional communication and reduce frustration as the child works to improve verbal communication skills.
