The primary goal of therapy sessions is to help your child to become more confident while saying the words/phrases/sentences that are most important and meaningful to him/her. Therapy sessions are individualized, and utilize a Multi-Sensory Approach. Use of tactile support to facilitate motor kinesthetic awareness, along with visual and auditory cues, are used during speech therapy sessions. A motor-based approach (e.g. DTTC, REST, PROMPT) that applies the principles of motor learning is chosen specifically for your child depending upon the level of severity, response to prompts, etc. All interventions are embedded in activities specifically tailored to your child’s interests, so that he/she is motivated and engaged during the therapeutic process.
I am a huge advocate for parent involvement throughout the therapeutic process. My goal is to equip parents to confidently work with their child during and outside of therapy sessions, in an effort to increase progress and generalization of skills. Parents have an active role in providing input on goals that are important to them, as well as word targets that are specific to their child’s interests.
I believe that AAC is a great supplemental tool for children with Apraxia of Speech. I use both low-tech (e.g. communication board/choice board) as well as high-tech (e.g. iPad with AAC app) AAC to supplement (when appropriate) verbal communication.
