The initial focus of my treatment is to establish rapport and trust with my client. It is imperative to establish trust. My therapy with CAS is 100% based on the principles of motor planning. Response to verbal cues such as “look at my mouth, eyes on me,” would be used to give the client visual feedback of targeted words. Treatment will be based on the list of sounds that the client can produce and sounds the client is stimulable to produce. Syllable shapes would also be documented as this will drive the treatment plan. In addition, the family will be requested to provide a list of “power words” that are meaningful and important to the client to incorporate into therapy sessions. Every session will focus on the principles of motor learning, which includes the accuracy of movement by frequent practice. Co-articulation, prosody and an emphasis on vowel precision would be addressed in every session. My practice focuses on developing the clients intrinsic desire to improve. Verbal praise, words of encouragement, positive feedback and a growth mindset are all nurtured during sessions.
Parents are an important part of the therapy process. I think it is important to have an open line of communication whether it is 5 minutes after a session, an email with therapy highlights or a scheduled meeting to review progress, parent involvement and communication is critical. Initially parents will be asked to provide information about their child. For example; likes/dislikes, strengths/differences etc. The parents will then be asked to provide a list of 5-10 power words that are important to the client. This list would be incorporated into therapy sessions. Commitment to scheduling is important since CAS treatment usually consists of numerous sessions across the week. Parents would be asked to commit to a rigorous therapy schedule and observation during the session is always encouraged. Parents are requested to not be off-site while the client is in session. Once the client demonstrates ability to produce target words with minimal cues, homework would be assigned and parents would be requested to assist with carryover.
I immediately encourage the use of gestures, American Sign Language and a core board to facilitate functional communication. I have experience with high tech apps such as Proloquo, GoTalk and TouchChat. In addition, I have incorporated the use of visual picture systems to increase a clients’ functional communication. I have advance education in the field of Augmentative-Alternative Education as I have certification in Assistive Technology Applications from California State University Northridge, 2004.
