Overall, I use an eclectic, play-based approach utilizing strategies that involve a variety of cues (hand signs, visual cards) and modeling, with a limited set of target words or phrases to be also practiced in the home. Typically I do an in-depth initial evaluation and develop a target list of words/phrases that are most functional for the patient at home and make the biggest impact on their intelligibility. Then we repeatedly practice those targets, adding on other words or lengthening phrases. I make sure the patient is engaged and motivated throughout, the therapy is fun and the words are meaningful.
