My therapy approach is tailored to the individual child, and incorporates the principles of motor learning. We work hard, but I use different activities to keep the child engaged and motivated. My therapy works because in addition to using evidence-based practice, the child knows that I care about them and that I am rooting for their success.
I know how busy parents can be. I like to involve parents in the process, especially in choosing words and phrases to work on with the child. And if parents are able to do speech homework, I encourage it. Practice makes permanent so I provide careful guidance when assigning words to work on.
AAC can be a powerful tool for communication and I have seen it benefit many children. Low tech and high tech both have their roles for children that struggle with verbal communication.
