I try to make it as fun as possible as this is very challenging for our clients. I usually do PROMPT with my kids. I will start at whatever level my particular client is at. CV, VC, CVC. I will start with trials of words in an activity of some sort. Maybe with dot art, or matching, or with a bean bag toss, etc. So they stay motivated. Gummy bears and the iPad also help. After several trials of their words I then move onto some kind of game with them with their words, approximations to drill the sounds/words again. So they are getting the motor planning, repetition throughout the session. I also will map sounds in on words even if they can' t fully get them. I will continue doing this with different activities playing games, book with repetitive words for them to repeat until the end of their sessions. Give the parent their homework and then they leave.
Parents are present for each session and understand what their child is working on and then they are given what was worked on in the session for homework for the week. What is worked on in the session is explained to the parent, so they can carryover the strategies for until the next session.
I have used both AAC and PEC's with my clients with CAS when they have had difficulty communicating what they want. I have directed them to show me with either form of communication what they wanted and it has reduced their frustration by being able to communicate without the frustration. I have also been able to use it when asking questions. They were able to answer using either the iPad, PEC's to answer. They would also use the technology to write sentences, follow along with books during therapy, play games, and ask and answer questions while increasing their language.
