This depends on the age of the child and their overall awareness of movement, especially oral motor movement. I specialize in working with young children in the early intervention setting and therapy at this age involves ongoing assessment while co-treating other possible language/phonological disorders. Initial treatment sometimes involves practicing big/small and fast/slow arm movements and then generalizing those movements to the mouth. A diagnosis of CAS can be made once there is enough information to rule out other diagnoses. When treating CAS, I select high frequency/motivating words to target specific sound shapes. Saying these words simultaneously with the clinician is often effective in building the child’s confidence in their own ability to say new words. I use tactile, visual, and verbal cues to help move the child from simultaneous production to independent production. AAC options are introduced early to reduce frustrations surrounding communication. As each target word reaches generalization, another word is added.
Parents are asked to observe and participate in therapy sessions. Parents are provided with education and resources for CAS. They are involved in selecting meaningful target words and taught how to work on these words at home
I help families select an AAC type (low vs high tech) and coach them on how to implement it at home. I use AAC to help reduce frustrations around communication and promote language skills while the child is still working on speech production.
