Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder in which a child has difficulty with communicating the “movement message” from their brain to the mouth (lips, tongue, etc.) Our therapy will work on choosing words that are important to your child/family and practicing that set of words repeatedly to help your child become more familiar with the movement that’s required to produce those specific words.
As a parent, YOU know your child best! You will play an important part in choosing word targets to place into your routines at home to help carry over skills we practice in therapy. You are a fantastic model for your child and I will help guide you in ways that you can help your child communicate in the home!
While working on spoken language is a goal we will actively be working on, there are a variety of tools that can help your child communicate their wants/needs. Some of these options include: signing, providing picture boards, using visual schedules or even using high-tech items (such as an iPad communication program). I have experience using all of these methods to help children communicate while working on motor planning and I’ll gladly assist you with finding what works best for your child!
