I use highly motivating items to target speech production targets at a high frequency throughout the session. I also incorporate consistent hand cues for placement of speech targets. I am intentional in fading cues and transitioning the child to successful and spontaneous production of words.
I like to show parents the hand cues and the importance of frequent practice throughout the day. I like to help the parents think through daily routines, requests, and highly motivating items they can use to practice speech targets. I also encourage parents to be responsive to communication attempts and reward approximations and efforts when a child is attempting to communicate. Empowering the parents the simplify words and reward word approximations and the child's attempts is important for the child to feel successful with verbal communication.
If imitation is difficult I often pair manual sign language for requesting and encourage imitation of manual signs for requesting paired with the word and/or word approximation. For some of my older children with more severe CAS I have utilized communication devices for communication while continuing to pair with verbal approximations to continue to facilitate speech production skills.
