Therapy is hard work, but a lot of fun! Play-based therapy and use of functional/important words are paramount for me when planning sessions for children with Apraxia. I apply evidence-based therapy approaches that incorporate Principles of Motor Learning, such as DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing). Parents/family join in sessions to observe the cueing and approaches being used.
Family is always present at therapy sessions. Parents, grandparents, etc., are welcome. Whichever family member brings your child will be watching and participating in therapy. It is so important for family members to learn strategies and cueing so they can help support the child at home. And, it is important for me to learn important information from family report too!
I use low tech visuals in therapy regularly (visuals, communication boards), and strongly encourage use high tech options whenever possible (e.g. iPad apps such as Cough Drop), and as early as possible!
