The first step is to create a positive relationship with the child, through games and positive reinforcement. I discuss with the parents to decide together which words or expressions would be useful for the child to use in daily life and how they can work it at home. These will by our target words, which will be worked through several meaningful and functional activities and games. Depending on the child's age and collaboration, I will chose an approach supported by the research (evidence-based practice) to organize my sessions and monitor progress. If needed, I will also provide the child with ways to communicate other than with speech (AAC, see lower), in parallel to the work on speech. My number one objective is to help the child to communicate better and be understood.
Parents become therapy partners, as they need to attend the sessions, understand the principles of treatment and work on some objectives at home, previously decided together.
My first goal is to give the children a way to express themselves to lower frustrations and give them a feel of success. I rapidly give the child opportunities to communicate with natural gestures and sounds, with images (pictograms) and eventually, if needed, a high tech device, such as an iPad with a communication grid.
