After completing a thorough assessment of your child’s speech and language skills, therapy goals will be selected. Parents have input on goal selection, particularly in selecting functional target words and phrases (for example: names of favourite toys, foods, people). Therapy sessions are highly engaging and play-based while encouraging of a high number of attempts at practicing their target words and phrases. For young children who are not communication risk takers or who avoid attempting words which are difficult to say, appropriate goal selection is very important. Target words will be achievable and presented in motivating activities which encourage your child to attempt new words. Parents will be given suggestions on how to work on these target words at home, in fun and playful ways.
Observe therapy sessions whenever possible, often 'take turns' in our activities so they can practice helping their child, parents provide input on target selection, parents practice daily with their child (typically less than 5 minutes of 'direct' homework)
It is very important to help your child communicate his/her wants and needs in some way while we are working towards using words to communicate. Gestures, baby signs and picture communication are encouraged from the beginning of therapy. These alternative methods of communication can help reduced frustration and often help the words develop more easily.
