My therapy practices for children with CAS are first and foremost catered to the individual child/family I am working with; specifically, their individual strengths, interests and hopes. More technically speaking, I am most comfortable with DTTC as a therapy tool for targeting CAS but do have some experience using the REST therapy protocol as well as tools created by Nancy Kaufman. I always use pre- and post- treatment measures as treatment progresses to measure/demonstrate progress in a concrete way.
Parents are invited and encouraged to be an active member of their child's CAS journey starting with assessment and moving through treatment. I require parents to be present for assessment sessions and invite and encourage attendance during therapy sessions as often as possible. I provide 'gentle' and realistic homework for the families I work with.
In my opinion AAC is a tool that can help build a bridge to connected speech and language for children with CAS. I have used low tech AAC options like PODD books and/or activity pages with Boardmaker pictures as well as high tech options such as TouchChat on a dedicated device. AAC options are always highly individualized based on the needs of each child and the commitment of the intervention team around them (family, caregivers, care providers, school etc).
