In therapy, I work with the child to help them develop the skills they need to communicate more effectively. This includes practice with speech sounds, patterns and words, and working on communication skills in a variety of contexts. Therapy sessions are tailored to the child's individual needs and may involve games, toys, and other fun activities to keep the child engaged and motivated. We work collaboratively with you and your child to set goals and select targets that are most important and relevant to your child's communication needs. We understand that every child with CAS is unique and may have different communication challenges and goals. That's why we personalize the therapy approach to best fit your child's needs and interests. We want to ensure that your child enjoys the therapy sessions and feels motivated to participate actively in the process.
Parents are an integral part of the therapy process! I believe that family involvement is critical for the child's success in therapy. Parents are the experts when it comes to their child, and they know their child best. Therefore, I collaborate with parents to develop a therapy plan that is tailored to their child's unique needs and goals. Parents are expected to attend and be involved in each session to learn the strategies they will use during home practice.
I have significant experience helping families implement high-tech AAC into their life including navigating funding applications. In therapy, I work with the child and their family to determine the most appropriate AAC option based on their individual needs, abilities, and preferences. AAC can be used to support communication for children with CAS, with low-tech options such as picture cards and sign language effective for those with limited verbal skills, and high-tech options such as tablets and speech-generating devices useful for those with more advanced communication needs. I also provide training and support to help the child and their family learn how to use the AAC system effectively.
