Congratulations to Brooke Andrews, MA, CCC-SLP, for graduating from the Apraxia Kids Intensive Training Institute (Apraxia Boot Camp)!

I always knew I wanted to work with kids decided to study Speech Pathology after my cousin was diagnosed with autism and started speech therapy.  I’m so happy I did because I can’t imagine doing anything else!  Over the past 14 years, I have worked in a variety of settings, including preschool, Early Intervention, and most recently, my own Private Practice.  I’m also a mom to a toddler who began physical and occupational therapy early on.  That experience gave me a new understanding of what it’s like to be on “other side” of therapy.  I have a passion for working in Early Intervention.  I love the challenge of making therapy fun and motivating, but also effective and evidence based.

Brooke offers services in Houston, Texas.

Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Brooke: How to perform a comprehensive assessment.  How to develop a therapy plan.

Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Brooke: It was great meeting so many professionals from so many different places. There was another SLP from my city and although we knew each other before, we now have each other as a resource and know each other better.

Apraxia Kids: How have you implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp?
Brooke: I changed from “winging it’ in therapy to having a solid and research-backed plan.

Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Brooke: I hope to be a “go-to” resource in my community, especially for children under the age of 5.

Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Brooke: Go for it! I thought I knew a lot about apraxia, but there was so much more to learn and boot camp is the perfect place to deepen your knowledge!
