01 Apr Apraxia has fueled my passion – by: McKenzie Emmons

My name is McKenzie Emmons, and I am wrapping up my junior year at Claremont McKenna College in California. I am majoring in neuroscience with an emphasis on behavioral sciences, on the pre-med route. Additionally, I am a proud member of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) college soccer team.
I also have childhood apraxia of speech. My diagnosis does not define who I am, but it is a part of me. My journey with aphasia and apraxia of speech began when I was just 2.5 years old. Diagnosed with both conditions, I underwent years of intensive speech therapy. These early years were challenging, but I never allowed my diagnoses to hinder my dreams or limit my potential. Instead, I viewed them as obstacles to overcome, fueling my determination to succeed.
Throughout my life, I have faced and conquered numerous challenges that may have seemed insurmountable for someone with apraxia and aphasia. In fifth grade, I took on the lead role in my elementary school play, an experience that helped build my confidence. During middle school, I served as class-president, and in high school, I delivered several speeches presenting research I conducted on the mental health of student-athletes.
Currently, I am thoroughly enjoying my undergraduate studies in neuroscience. I have been able to delve deeply into understanding the brain, with a particular focus on the areas responsible for speech. Learning about the intricate workings of the brain and how various conditions, like aphasia and apraxia, impact speech has been incredibly enlightening and has further fueled my passion for this field. These experiences have not only shaped my personal growth but also solidified my passion for helping others with similar speech disorders. As a neuroscience student at a competitive college, I am driven by a calling to treat and develop solutions for individuals diagnosed with speech problems, just as I was.
My ultimate goal is to inspire and demonstrate that… nothing is impossible.
