I first build rapport and establish motivation with what the child is interested in. I then review the vowels and consonants within the child's repertoire to choose target words. The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol is often utilized incorporating principles of motor learning. Some treatment strategies utilized include multisensory cues, gesture cues, verbal and visual cues, gradually fading cues, errorless teaching (cueing before failure), error correction, mass to distributed practice, and mixing and varying tasks to avoid overgeneralization. The treatment methods implemented are considered for each child to best accommodate each individual.
Parent education and training is very important to encourage learned skills within the naturalistic setting. Parents are encouraged to observe each session and a home program is established for continued practice.
Sign language is an option that may be utilized as a bridge to spoken language. If a child has an AAC device, they are able to bring it to sessions to be used along with addressing speech motor skills. If a child does not have an AAC device and I feel that they would benefit from an AAC evaluation, I would refer to a speech-language pathologist who specializes in that area.
