My therapy sessions are very interactive, allowing both play and focused practice to improve my client’s speech production. Each client’s sessions will be tailored to his/her individual needs. This is specific to which targets are being addressed, how practice is structured, and which cueing/prompting strategies are most effective in that moment. Parents can be involved at their level of comfort, joining the session or discussing the session and the home program after we’ve completed our work. I always encourage as much parent involvement as possible to improve carryover and generalization.
As stated above, I encourage families to participate as much as they are willing and able to. Some parents are actively involved during sessions, while others chat with me after each session. I provide a run down of the session and also what the family can do at home for the home program. I also encourage families to contact me whenever they have a question or just want to share a milestone in their child’s speech!
I love to incorporate AAC systems as early as possible! So many times, I’ve seen my clients experience communication frustration because they know exactly what they want to say, however they can’t get it out! I’ve employed a variety of AAC systems, including sign language, picture symbols for exchanging or point boards, AAC apps, and robust AAC communication systems.
