I hold a strong belief that therapy for children should center around following a child's lead, foster their motivations and preferences, with an overall goal to build confident and effective communicators. Additionally, I frequently incorporate sensory strategies (e.g. movement, tactile activities, etc.) into my sessions to achieve and maintain an optimum level of arousal for the child, in order to have highly productive sessions. Parent education and involvement is essential for the treatment of CAS, therefore, I strongly encourage parents and caregivers to be active participants in therapy sessions and carrying out home programs. When treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I typically utilize strategies from Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), which focuses on improving motor speech skills through a high level of strategic cueing, and gradually fading back cues as the child becomes more independent with targeted words. Target words are carefully considered and selected based on the child's current sound inventory, functionality and parent goals/input in order to increase functional communication and early success in therapy.
I strongly believe that it is crucial for parents to be as involved in therapy as possible. I am a Hanen certified therapist, and I frequently utilize these approaches to train and coach parents to be confident in their ability to be a part of the intervention team. As a parent myself, I hold a belief that YOU are the expert on your child, and I am here to support you to become a critical member in your child’s journey towards effective communication. I typically encourage parents to sit in on sessions, while I model and explain strategies as I go. Once children are ready to start practicing their words at home, I will supply parents with our target list of words to facilitate generalization carryover to your child’s home environment.
I often take a multimodal communication approach early in therapy, to provide functional communication to the child, model language and reduce frustration (for children AND parents). I have used both high-tech systems (e.g. LAMP Words for Life, Proloquo2Go, GoTalk, etc.) on iPad's or other dedicated devices, as well as low-tech systems, such as sign language and picture systems as needed. I look at a child's individual needs and skill set in order to determine an appropriate route if AAC is needed.
