At Medical Center Enterprise we aim to make speech therapy enjoyable, while aiding your child in making great strides in their speech performance. If Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is suspected, we will begin by completing a motor speech assessment, which will include an oral motor exam to evaluate movements of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and palate, followed by collection of a speech and language sample through play and interaction. Once an assessment has been completed, I will provide evidence-based treatment and a multi-modal cueing approach specific to deficits identified and your child's needs. I will develop a treatment hierarchy, which typically begins with full support to elicit imitation, decreasing levels of support across treatment sessions to promote independence. In treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I begin by building off of the child's strengths, whether that be previously acquired words or individual vowels and consonant shapes, with a long-term goal of establishing functional carryover for communication in the child's meaningful environments. I believe that a relationship with a child and their caregivers is essential to success and carryover of speech therapy. Therefore, I work hard to create an inviting environment that increases patient engagement, ultimately resulting in my ability to elicit repetition of targets as needed for this population.
Parent/caregiver involvement is critical for patient success and carryover. I value information collected through parent interview and consider their concerns and needs when establishing goals. I designate 5-10 minutes of my session to parent education, providing instruction through verbal and written means, as well as a physical model as necessary. I provide a home program weekly and encourage parents to write down successes or difficulties as observed in the home environment.
I have experience programming and using both LAMP and Tobii Dynavox devices. I have used both high tech devices that are touch and eye gaze generated. The use of communication boards and Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) has been greatly beneficial and are used not only for supplemental and transitional purposes, but also as visual support to promote understanding and use of communication exchange.
