My treatment is based on a dynamic and multisystem approach. I choose a small set of words based on a child’s phonetic inventory, interests and needs. From there, I plan engaging play-based activities to practice these words. Within practice, I use DTTC, PROMPT, and specific feedback to assist the child in correct word productions. Children are consistently given positive reinforcement and motivators within practice to feel successful. When a target word is mastered, we practice the word with varying prosody to promote generalization of skills.
Family involvement in goal setting and parent education throughout treatment is key. Parents are provided with high frequency word lists that are meaningful and functional for the child to practice at home. When families participate in therapy sessions, they have an opportunity to ask questions and observe the strategies that are used.
To encourage functional communication with children diagnosed with CAS and to reduce overall frustration I use low-tech and high tech AAC. These may include: sign language, picture symbols, communication boards, and speech generating apps/devices to support communication. These tools are incorporated into treatment and are used while the child is working to achieve their verbal speech skills.
