We use a motor learning approach to treat childhood apraxia of speech. We start by looking at the sounds and syllable shapes your child has to choose a small number of functional, everyday words target. During therapy, we use a variety of cues to help your child produce the target word accurately. Your child and the clinician will initially produce words slowly and in unison with each other. Then, cues are systematically faded . We focus on movement-based cues rather than sound-based cues. We try to get a lot of repetitions of each target. Practice at home is important to help your child learn each target. This treatment approach is known as DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing).
We encourage parents to be active participants in their child's therapy. We encourage parents to observe therapy sessions so that they are familiar with their child's target words and how to provide appropriate cues. We provide home practice recommendations after each therapy session. Home practice is important in helping a child learn how to use their target words in a variety of settings (e.g. home, school, community).
AAC can be an important tool for supporting communication in individuals with CAS. I recommend an individualized AAC evaluation in order to determine which communication supports might be most helpful. If AAC supports are recommended, I encourage targeting both AAC and verbal speech in therapy.
