The principals of motor learning guide my treatment. Using visual, verbal, and/or tactical cues, my treatment aims to be dynamic with priority on adjusting cues according to a child's response. I strive to provide a level of support and challenge that provide an optimal level for children to achieve fluent, intelligible, and functional speech. I prioritize the use of functional and useful targets in speech therapy to increase the child's ability to communicate in his/her own environment.
I provide feedback after each session to ensure parents understand what their home practice should look like, what correct productions sound like, and the level and cues that should accompany the child's practice for each of their targets. Home practice increases the rate of progress in speech therapy and is encouraged.
At times, a child who has severe impairments in intelligibility, may benefit from the assistance of a device that can be used to communicate messages. It can ease the frustration that can accompany not being understood by others, while the child works on building a repertoire of functional and intelligible spoken words.
