I use a multi-sensory approach that allows children to practice their speech skills in a fun, yet effective way. I structure therapy sessions so there is frequent repetition of sounds and movements, direct feedback, and activities that maintain a child's attention and set them up to be successful. I believe that movement; visual, auditory, and verbal feedback; and music are all important elements of speech therapy. I target speech sounds, words, and phrases that are meaningful for the child and family in order for them to be successful communicators.
Parents are an integral part of a child's success and need to be a part of the therapy process. When a child has mastered a new sound or word in a therapy session, the SLP will work with the parents to ensure practice and carry-over at home. If a child is using sign language or a speech generating device in the therapy setting, the SLP will work with parents and caregivers to ensure that they have knowledge and confidence in using these methods at home. If a child responds to visual cues, the SLP will make sure parents have a way to learn and use these cues within their daily routines. Therapy sessions will begin and end with parent interactions, whether it be reflecting on how previous strategies have been working, or checking in on present challenges. These are examples of how the SLP and parents/caregivers work together so that children with CAS have a positive experience with communication.
I have used a variety of AAC for children with CAS, depending on the severity and need. I have used picture choices and picture boards in order for children to make their wants and needs known. I have used pictures to make "family and favorites" books for younger children to increase not only their vocabulary but also to increase their prosody. I have used speech generating devices to facilitate communication and have worked with school districts to support the use of specific programs.
