My sessions are fun for the child with highly reinforcing items intermixed with tasks. This helps increase endurance with presented tasks. Treatment methods are implemented through the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) which is based upon the principals of motor learning. I look at the child's vowel and consonant repertoire and error patterns to determine where to begin treatment and establish targeted goals. I use simplified motor plans until a child is able to produce adult forms of the targets. Parents are trained and able to observe each session, this helps facilitate speech language development within natural contexts. Early learners work on single word lists (favorites, common nouns, and verbs). When working on speech-motor a hierarchy from single syllables to words, words to phrases, then phrases to sentences, and to natural conversational speech.
Our parents are encouraged to observe each of our sessions. Within the center we are one way mirrors with observation rooms, currently with COVID restrictions parents are able to stream the session. Parents are also provided with visual handouts and ideas for home programs to continue practice and stimulation in the natural setting.
At times we use sign language as bridge to communication while speech-motor skills are developing. Sign language can be a facilitator to spoken language. Some children do have AAC devices that they have gotten from school, if a child has a device the team would collaborate together on use of the device.
