A consultation with Mayo Clinic's CAS specialists includes comprehensive communication evaluation with focused assessment of motor speech skill. We explore therapy techniques to assess the child's readiness and responsiveness to various cues. Detailed recommendations are offered based on the presence/severity of CAS and other communication limitations identified. Specialists at Mayo Clinic developed the treatment program Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) for Speech Motor Skill for younger children or children with severe CAS. This approach, as well as therapy I do with older children, is strongly grounded in principles of motor learning.
Parents observe therapy and I give them direct instruction in how to cue their child. I will have them try to do this during the therapy session so I can give feedback.
I strongly encourage gestures and signs. I also support more formal AAC but rely on my colleagues who are more expert in AAC to make recommendations about the most appropriate tools to use.
