My sessions are “working” sessions, disguised with “fun!” Use of highly reinforcing items and intermixing reinforcers with practice helps to increase endurance, trials, and pace of each session. Treatment methods are implemented through the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) which is based upon principals of motor learning. Vowel and consonant repertoire and error patterns are examined to determine where to begin in treatment and establish targets. Treatment procedures include the following: cues and fading cues as indicated by child’s performance, errorless teaching (cue before failure), error correction, mass to distribute practice, block to random practice, & mixing and varying tasks to encourage generalization. Early learners work on single word lists such as favorite things, common nouns/verbs, “power” words to manipulate their environment (i.e. out, up, stop, open), mands (requests), as well as their specific targets. Speech-motor practice progresses in terms of motor planning in a hierarchy from single syllables to words, words to phrases and from phrases into sentences and natural speech. Simplified motor plans are used temporarily until a child is able to produce adult forms of targets. Parents are trained and able to observe each session in order to facilitate speech-language development within natural contexts.
Parents are encouraged to observe each session. Parent education and training is provided in order to facilitate speech-motor skills in natural settings. A home program is established for continued speech-motor practice and language stimulation. Parents spend the most time with their child and are in the best position to encourage carryover of skills into settings beyond the treatment room.
Use of sign language as a means to “bridge the gap” while motor-speech skills are developing is utilized as needed. We often see sign language as a facilitator to spoken language. However, I am not fully trained in AAC devices. If a child is a candidate for AAC device as the primary means of communication, I refer to a consultant.
