I provide speech therapy services that are individualized to each client. I work alongside families to create specific, meaningful target word lists to practice during therapy sessions. During therapy sessions, children work HARD but have FUN while doing it. Children say many repetitions of their target words, getting feedback along the way to become more independent in their productions.
Parents are encouraged observe and/or participate in each session. At the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center, each room is equipped with a one-way mirror that parents are encouraged to observe from. Parents are also encouraged to help generate practice words for their child's session, as well as to create opportunities to practice the target words in daily contexts. In the early intervention setting, the emphasis is on parent education and coaching to promote increased functional communication in daily contexts.
Many of my clients utilize speech generating devices or core language boards. Clients are encouraged to utilize these devices to communicate during the session regarding naturally occurring activities/events. I often model words/phrases for the client on the device. Should you wish to have specific sessions targeted to increasing your child's ability to utilize their speech generating device, we make additional arrangements for that.
