My therapy is often play-based, incorporating our treatment set into highly motivating or engaging activities. When children are motivated, getting high-trial practice becomes easier. Within the play, I require high numbers of repetitions. Sessions typically involve practicing a set of 2-5 target words. These target words are selected based upon the sounds the child currently has in their sound system or functional words for the child. We practice in conditions that vary upon the child's need for support. For example, if they need more support, I may have the child practice the word simultaneously or in imitation, and we may repeat that word several times. If they need less support, I may try to elicit a target word spontaneously or in response to a question.
Parents are welcome to be present in sessions to observe cueing techniques and activities for target words, but when they are not present, I inform families of our treatment set (or target words), the level of cueing provided (direct imitation, delayed, etc.) and how they can elicit practice in the home environment. Providing education to parents for home carryover supports principles of motor learning of frequent and distributed practice.
I have previously used low and high-tech AAC with CAS to augment verbal communication (ex. words they cannot motor-plan yet), repair communication breakdowns, and pair vocabulary on device with target words. For example, when we were practicing "me" in therapy, I would often pair practice with the 'me' icon to reinforce learning.
