I aim to make my therapy sessions child-led, while focusing on a high number of trials of a few select targets. I prioritize learning the child’s interests and motivations, and building off of those to make therapy fun and successful, whether it’s books, toys, games, movement, or art. I rely on multisensory cueing, using visuals, verbal cues, gestures, and hand movements to reach successful practice. AAC is a big part of my therapy, ranging from sign language to speech generating devices, to decrease frustration and build connection and confidence. I believe home practice plays an important role in generalization of skills, and strive to send home practice that can be simple and child-led.
Parents are always invited to sit in the therapy room or the adjacent observation room to observe therapy. They are encouraged to ask questions during or after the session. After a few initial sessions, I will review the plan of care with parents, which details the long term and short term (6 month) goals I have for the child. I ask parents for their feedback about their child’s goals, and invite them to share what goals they have for their child. I like collaborating with parents and teachers, gaining input on important words they use at home/school to prioritize in therapy. I send home practice each week, aiming to make it child directed and easy to fit into a family’s already established routine.
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is a very important component to me in treatment for children with CAS. I utilize low-tech AAC (gestures, sign language, picture cards/boards) and high-tech AAC (speech generating devices) to help my clients communicate using the best means possible. I prioritize exposing my clients to high-tech, speech generating devices in order to provide them with a robust and personalized vocabulary. I believe this builds their confidence, as well as their speech and language skills.
