When targeting motor speech deficits, particularly with motor planning, it is important to build new motor sequences so my sessions primarily focus on just that, unless the child is not ready. I am currently trained in targeting Childhood Apraxia of Speech using Dynamic Tactile and Temporal (DTTC) approach. In order to make successful progress in verbal speech and learning new motor sequences, building a strong relationship is key to each child's success. I meet each child where they are for that given session and create a positive learning environment while creating opportunities for success.
I also find it important to build overall language and communication throughout the session. Providing opportunities and strategies to support communication during structured activities and play-based activities are a big part of the session as well.
With successful speech targets, I encourage parents to practice along the way. I also provide new strategies to help build communication and generalization of targets within their everyday activities.
It is extremely important to give each child an opportunity to communicate when words are not available. Research supports the use of AAC as it often positively impacts and reinforces expressive communication. It is so important to have these options available when words are not always easy to produce, especially for children with CAS.
