I am a bilingual speech-language pathologist who speaks Spanish and English, and I completed advanced training in Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cuing (DTTC). I take a child-centered approach in all assessments and therapy sessions. Initially, our treatment with your child may be play-based with targeted items to help gather information about how they spontaneously produce speech, to build their trust and rapport, and to determine what multisensory cues may support them. Over time, we build their skills in participating in modified drills of target words that we practice together, closely, at a low table, with support such as us saying or mouthing the words together, and eventually building their abilities to produce the words on their own. I frequently implement multimodal communication strategies as a component of our therapy together, such as modeling signs and use of iPads with voice-output apps on them, to help each child functionally communicate while we work on speech movement patterns.
Parents know their children better than anyone, and I include parents in every session since we are a team working toward helping their child. You will be invited into our treatment room, and together we will identify target words that your child will practice. At the end of each session, your child and I will show you strategies that help them improve their speech accuracy, and we will identify key routines and times that you can use to practice at home using their target words and strategies.
Our clinic site implements use of no-tech communication boards that children can point to on the wall of every treatment room and the waiting room, as well as use of iPads with voice-output apps on them that your child can use to functionally express themselves while we work on their speech production. We work closely with multiple state and insurance programs to help your child get a dedicated AAC device, and our clinic has multiple loaner devices that you can trial while we help you get the device. We also provide copies of the communication boards that we have around our office.
