I first build rapport and establish motivation with what the child is interested in. Motivation is one of the keys to successful and engaging sessions. I then review the vowels and consonants within the child's repertoire to choose target words. I will also include that family during this time to create a “favorites” list. These are words that are important to the family and may include TV shows, family names, or functional phrases. The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol is often utilized as it is rooted in principles of motor learning. Some treatment strategies utilized include multisensory cues, gesture cues, verbal and visual cues, gradually fading cues, errorless teaching (cueing before failure), error correction, mass to distributed practice, and mixing and varying tasks to avoid overgeneralization. The treatment methods implemented are considered for each child to best accommodate them as an individual.
During my sessions, caregivers are encouraged to observe each session. Training and education for caregivers is key for facilitating speech-motor skills in a natural setting. I work with the caregivers to create an individualized home program to continue working on speech-motor practice and language stimulation outside of the therapy environment.
I encourage all children who have an AAC device to bring their device to every session. I utilize all methods of communication a child uses throughout each session. If I feel an AAC device would benefit their communication, I refer to an SLP with specialized training. Sign language may also be utilized as a bridge to spoken language.
