During the first few sessions, I focus on creating a comfortable environment for the child as well as building rapport so that we create a trusting relationship that will set us up for success during the course of treatment. I encourage parent involvement and want to create targets that are functional for the child, so it’s important to initially gather a list of words that are frequently used at home to begin working on. Based on the child’s sound repertoire, I pick a few targets (sounds, words, phrases, etc) to work on in increased repetition trials. This is done by use of a play-based approach to keep the sessions fun and productive for the child. I use a variety of cues, such as verbal, visual (sound picture cue cards), and tactile (PROMPT cues). As the child creates motor plans for various sound sequences, I increase the complexity of targets and work on generalizing these skills across different settings.
I think it’s extremely important to have the entire family involved in the treatment of CAS. My prior experience working for DC Strong Start provided me with knowledge of parent coaching and I enjoy taking parts of this approach with the families that I work with. When parents get a chance to ask questions and learn about what I am working on during my sessions, they feel more empowered to practice at home.
I believe that using AAC to facilitate communication is very beneficial. Use of AAC not only promotes verbal language, but also reduces a child’s frustration as well as provides them with a mode of communication to get their wants and needs met. During my sessions, I use the total communication approach and work with the families to determine which form of AAC would best benefit the child to meet their communication goals.
