Get a rapport with the child, try to understand the child's behavior, provide a safe environment for the child to feel comfortable to communicate, and implement, since the beginning of our encounter, opportunities to cue the child to be improve his speech, or attempts to speak. I expect the child to do their best and I will expect that. I will provide a friendly environment that allow frequent repetitions of target words for progress of the treatment.
Parents are welcome to stay in the therapy session if it does not disturb the child's attention with me. I particularly enjoy the parents watching what we are doing. I provide explanation of what I'm doing, why I'm doing, and why I'm not doing something. If a parent is not present during the session, they are requested to come for the last 5 minutes of the session for a session review. I make short videos of the child's successful production ( with permission from the parents) so they can see it as well. Home program is based on each child and each family, usually few words that were produced successfully during the session.
The AAC is used to enhance the child's communication with the therapist and to understand how effective it can be in their daily lives communicating with others. I always asked if they already have a device when they come to me and I see how the child is using it. If they don't use any device or program I use pictures to enhance the communication. Personal pictures, PECS, LAMP, or other apps are used if they already have it implemented.
