The first few sessions will focus on connection, rapport, and really getting to know your child. I believe establishing a connection is so important. It helps me to effectively improve your child's communication and drive their participation, motivation, and progression. Specific intervention style and targets will vary based on your child's age, development, CAS severity, interests, and your family's goals. I use DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cues) which works well in "gallery" view during Zoom sessions where we are side by side, like we are sitting next to each other and looking at ourselves in a mirror. You help us determine targets based on meaningful language to your child… the things they speak about daily! Your child helps determine preferred names and descriptions for the motor plans for our targets. I model gestures and touch cues to help your child produce their targets with me. Our targets are repeated together until consistent, then repeated by your child with only my simultaneous visual model. Support decreases as your child’s naturalness and ease improves, advancing from simultaneous to immediate imitation, then to delayed imitation, and finally to spontaneous productions. A variety of supports increase as your child demonstrates increased difficulty producing target words or phrases. Every child is different so specific techniques and cues are created as sessions progress based on trials, success, needs, and preferences. I am also trained in ReST so I recommend and implement this program across 3-6 weeks as appropriate.
You are the expert of your child and such an asset in this journey! I love how the convenience of virtual sessions increases the ease for families to become involved. Parents can be active or more passive participants in the therapeutic experience. When determining target words, I ask parents to provide the most important and frequently used words and phrases to their child and their daily routines. Functional and meaningful targets are key for progress! When parents are knowledgeable about our therapy strategies, their child's progress improves significantly. You can provide your child with support during practice and also in real life conversation to help them convey their thoughts and ideas. This also helps them really see and appreciate that their effort in therapy is truly helping them communicate out in their world!
I implement light-tech AAC when warranted since access to communication is essential! Depending on your child’s progress and needs, I collaborate with AAC specialists when a high-tech device may be more beneficial.
