Therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is individualized to each client and is based on intensive drills. The therapy sessions yield a high number of targets while utilizing engaging and fun activities to maintain the interest of the client. The targets are analyzed and tracked in-depth after every session, to facilitate the appropriate treatment path. A multimodal approach to treatment is implemented, utilizing the principles of motor learning including PROMPT cuing, gestures, visual, and verbal cues.
The parents are very involved in the therapy process and are present for the treatment sessions. They are taught how to support mastered targets outside of the clinic setting and facilitate their practice. Caregivers are an integral part of the process and support the clients within the clinic by providing encouragement, motivation, and reinforcement to keep their child engaged.
Implementation of AAC within treatment sessions consists of simultaneously modeling and using the AAC device while practicing speech drills. I use AAC within apraxia treatment sessions to help facilitate language, functional communication, and pair with practiced speech sounds when possible. AAC is also used within sessions to help repair any communication breakdowns, particularly when verbal speech is unreliable.
