When beginning therapy with a child who has suspected or confirmed CAS, I first build rapport with the child and the family and identify methods of communication the child can use to find immediate success. My overall therapy approach is a total communication approach - meaning we are introducing/identifying a lot of tools immediately to improve communication and reduce frustration. This can look like a combination of visuals, gestures, word approximations, and communication devices. As reliable communication is established, I can then introduce more structured methods targeting motor planning using a play-based method, which keeps therapy fun and the child engaged in each session to participate in a lot of practice of the motor sequences we are targeting.
Parent support and engagement is essential to our kids’ success! I meet with parents regularly to provide updates on what we are working on in therapy and how to support communication at home. Parents may be invited to observe therapy sessions or may be active participants in some sessions to learn how to carryover what we do in therapy, depending on the child’s age and needs.
AAC is a tool I introduce with nearly every client I work with, whether it is a long term communication option or a therapeutic tool to provide multi-sensory cues in our sessions. My goal is to first identify how a child is communicating, how we can immediately promote more successful communication, and then how we can make communication more efficient. In every client I’ve worked with that I have introduced AAC to, I have seen immediate reduction in frustration and often see improved intelligibility, which is in line with current research findings. AAC is not one size fits all, and I work to find the best fit for a child and their family.
