Children with CAS have trouble controlling their lips, jaws and tongues when speaking. In CAS, the brain has trouble planning for speech movement. The brain isn't able to properly direct the movements needed for speech. The speech muscles aren't weak, but the muscles don't form words the right way.
To speak correctly, the brain has to make plans that tell the speech muscles how to move the lips, jaw, and tongue. The movements usually result in accurate sounds and words spoken at the proper speed and rhythm. CAS affects this process. CAS is often treated with speech therapy. During speech therapy, a speech-language pathologist teaches the child to practice the correct way to say words, syllables, and phrases working with the family to carryover this practice in natural environments.
Parents are essential in any child's therapy process from start to finish. We will collaborate together to target goals that work within your family's daily routines so you may get repetitive practice. I do my best to get to know your child: his/her preferred learning styles, how he/she handles problems, motivators, and struggles. However, I can never replace a caregiver's intuitive connection with their child. You know your child's personality and temperament best. I only have limited time with your child every week. No matter what a child is learning or practicing during therapy sessions, teaching must be practiced and reinforced routinely. Caregivers have the advantage of spending much more time with their children. And considering children typically learn best to communicate during everyday activities, in comforting environments (e.g., home), and with familiar people (i.e., family) no one is better positioned to do that than a parent.
I have used both low tech and high tech (e.g., core word boards; pictures/symbols; communication books; LAMP Words for Life) to augment, clarify, request, and expand a child's communication.
