After the evaluation process is completed, therapy for a child with CAS will start by establishing a good rapport and getting to know the types of activities that your child enjoys and responds well to. I will be guiding you along in the process of therapy, so that you know exactly what we are working and why, as well as what you can do to help your child along the way. During sessions, I will present opportunities for him/her to carry out specific speech tasks focused on gestures and movements, using carefully selected target words based on their initial assessment. This will involve repeated practice, while having the child look at my face, and shape their mouth movements to match mine. I'll also be using entertaining activities and objects to make therapy fun and engaging for them throughout our sessions.
I like to ensure that the parents of my clients understand the reasoning and rationale behind the therapy practices that I choose for their child, and have any questions answered prior to starting treatment sessions. Parents are involved in observing their child’s therapy sessions with me, so that they have a full understanding of what the practice of those therapy techniques looks like, what their child’s speech and communication goals are, and what they can do at home to ensure adequate carry-over for maximal success and outcomes. We will maintain ongoing discussions about many aspects of therapy including: items/activities that your child shows interest in (for maintaining attention and engagement), how you see your child progressing outside of sessions, your ultimate goals for your child’s speech, and what unique target words or phrases you would like to see your child master over the course of their therapy.
AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, is a tool using buttons or symbol icons to represent words, phrases, or commonly used messages, in a variety of contexts, to help your child to communicate functionally in different settings while they are working on their speech goals. If your child has difficulty being understood by others when communicating with their friends, family, or school staff, AAC is a wonderful tool to alleviate this gap. It’s important to establish a communication system so that they can communicate in emergency situations, build relationships with peers, be able to use new words, and interact with familiar adults and teachers for learning and academic opportunities.
