During speech therapy with a child with CAS, I first highlight the importance and encourage the child to look at my face/mouth when practicing words/syllables and remind the child that we are practicing movements. During therapy, I typically select between 5-10 functional target words to work on and encourage many trials. I like to try for 100 target productions during the session. While the child is practicing the target words, I help them by modeling the word myself and giving clues/tips of what to do with their mouth. Once they are successful, I fade how much support I am giving them. In addition, I always have a fun activity or game to complete to keep the speech therapy session fun and engaging.
Early in the treatment process, I encourage parents to support their child in learning the importance of looking at our mouth/face when practicing their speech movements. Once the child has mastered target words, I assign them for homework to work on random practice/spontaneous productions to assist in generalization of speech movements.
I have recommended high tech AAC device for my clients/students with severe CAS or poor speech intelligibility so they have access to communication if a communication breakdown occurs. I have also recently implemented phrases in their AAC devices that help them advocate for themselves when trying to speak (e.g. "Wait while I find the word" or "Let me try again").
