My approach to CAS therapy is to work closely with the family for best outcomes. Specifically, obtaining the parent's input on important, high frequency words that would be beneficial for the child to be able to produce, as well as training parents to be able to support their child's communication skills. Additionally, I love helping parents feel confident in advocating for their child on a day-to-day basis as well as during more formal times, such as IEP meetings. My approach is to use the child's interests to motivate them to want to work on their communication skills, so that they can feel empowered by their hard work. Additionally, it is extremely important to me to build rapport and trust with the child so they feel comfortable enough to try hard things, together. Then, using highly motivating, play-based activities, we will use target words and multi-modal cueing to improve the child's overall sound repertoire, speech intelligibility, and confidence. My goal for every session is to have the child work hard and have a lot of fun doing so!

I have used AAC for children with CAS to support total communication. Using AAC empowers children to use their voice and supports overall communication development. Given that certain working on motor planning for sounds is hardwork and can take time, it is so important to me to implement AAC as a supplement to our speech work.
