Therapy for a child with CAS is direct and explicit. The focus for the sessions is on movement of the articulators (tongue/lips/jaw) as opposed to sounds as in traditional speech sound disorders. Children will be given varying levels of cueing in order to support the movement targets and quick reinforcers in order to get the most amount of trials per session. We employ DTTC tactics which include visual/tactile/auditory prompts with a varied length of time between the child's production and the therapist's production. It may start with simultaneous and later we will work on delayed imitation of these movements.
To start parents are welcome to observe sessions and be in the room to make the child comfortable. We want the child to be looking directly at our mouths so they can mimic the movements so we ask that parents are passive participants in therapy. Later when words are more accurately proceeded we will train parents how to practice with their child outside the therapy room!
Any child who doesn’t have a functional communication system is encouraged to use AAC during their apraxia treatment, first and foremost we want kids to be able to share their wants and needs!
