It is so important for children to be able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. It is even more important for them to be heard and understood. My therapy for a child with CAS begins with establishing a trusting relationship. That is best achieved by taking a child led approach and facilitating play based therapy with the child’s highly preferred interests. Once I establish a trusting relationship with a child and have determined the child’s current speech sound repertoire, I begin the work of modeling, cueing, and shaping the child's established speech productions. Providing mass varied practice opportunities, ample praise and feedback, accurate models, and motivating experiences is the foundation of my therapy for a child with CAS.
Parent and caregiver involvement is critical. Involving parents and caregivers begins with education. Parents and caregivers must understand what CAS is and what their child's CAS profile looks like through any initial evaluation data and ongoing therapy session data. After that, parents and caregivers, get ready to get on the floor in the session and play with your child! Your involvement will be participating hands-on in the session while learning the techniques of CAS therapy to help your child make progress by providing consistent practice at home.
In my therapy sessions unrestricted access to and abundant modeling of AAC is always a priority. This unrestricted access and abundant modeling provides an alternate avenue for children to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas when their motor speech systems are not an option for them. Unrestricted access to AAC Is an important vehicle to eliminate limitations for a child's communications and facilitates motor learning for speech production.
