My approach to therapy for a child with CAS mainly involves increasing successful communication and decreasing frustration for the child and their family. I believe supporting caregivers and providing them with tools to help facilitate meaningful interactions with their children is our number one goal as speech-language pathologists. I also encourage using a total communication approach in which we find ways to help a child to express themselves fully - whether it's through speaking, signing, gestures, devices, etc. - while simultaneously working toward more efficient motor planning for speech production and intelligibility.
I encourage parents to observe sessions whenever possible. I recommend having parents be involved during sessions as well so that I may provide feedback on how to implement strategies in a natural setting. I typically ask parents to provide a running list of functional words which occur frequently in the natural setting and are meaningful to the family. We use this list to help facilitate approximations of words that are easier to produce, which in turn help the child feel successful when communicating.
I use a variety of different types of AAC depending upon the child's communication needs, consideration for their global development (such as gross and fine motor), and what works best for the family to implement at home or in other important settings. I am trained to use PECS, but I also use pictures/icons in core vocabulary boards. In addition, I have experience using Proloquo2Go and TD snap for children with CAS.
