I have received training in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) to treat childhood apraxia of speech which is an approach that focuses on changing the motor/movement patterns of your child's speech productions, rather than on a phonological process of matching sounds to letters. We work on re-shaping these movement patterns through a combination of verbal, visual and tactile cues to change the brain's ability to plan and program motor sequences required for accurate speech productions. Sessions are shorter (approximately 30 minutes) and more frequent (2-3x/week) in order to incorporate more frequent practice in an effort to facilitate carryover more quickly. We will work together to select a target list of functional words for your child to practice and then continue to expand on this as your child becomes more proficient in sequencing movement patterns for their target stimuli. In addition to working on improving their speech productions, we will also work on reducing communication frustrations by implementing any necessary communication aids such as simple signs, picture communication boards, or AAC devices. Our goal is to set them up for success to be the best communicators they can be!
Parents are involved in every step of the therapy process, whether they sit in on sessions on not. At the beginning of therapy we work together to create a list of target words that are functional and meaningful for your child. As we move through the DTTC hierarchy I will keep you abreast of where we are in this process so that you know when and what types of cues to provide for your child outside of sessions, in order to facilitate carryover and generalization of skills.
I have used a combination of both low and high tech AAC to help facilitate communication for children with CAS. This is dependent upon each individual child and family so we will work together to find the option that best suits their needs (PECS, Coreboard, AAC app, etc).
