Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Jennifer: I learned, maybe most importantly, the value of being a part of a professional community as passionate about the treatment of children with CAS as I am. I also learned to read research carefully and critically, in order to combine my knowledge of evidence-based practice with my own clinical expertise in order to provide highly effective individualized treatment for each client. Finally, I learned new means of assessment and treatment methods, which further developed my CAS evaluation/treatment “toolbox”.
Apraxia Kids: How did the Boot Camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Jennifer: My Boot Camp team (The Sunshine Team!) has maintained close contact since Boot Camp. We exchange numerous texts asking questions, looking for ideas, and supporting each other almost daily. Our wonderful mentor Pooja has made herself easily accessible to answer questions and offer her own thoughts and support when needed. I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing group of SLPs!
Apraxia Kids: How have you implemented the knowledge you gained at Boot Camp?
Jennifer: I implement the knowledge I’ve gained at Boot Camp every day. I am more conscientious about incorporating the Principles of Motor Learning into therapy, and have started using a wider variety of therapy techniques including DTTC, ReST, and Speech Motor Chaining.
Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Jennifer: I work with approximately 15 other SLPs at Columbus Speech & Hearing. I have had several opportunities to share my knowledge about assessment and treatment of CAS with my co-workers. In addition, since Boot Camp, I have had the opportunity to supervise 2 graduate students and share my expertise with them.
Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to Boot Camp next round?
Jennifer: If you are passionate about treating children with CAS, Boot Camp is a must! You won’t know how you managed before it without the knowledge, resources, and professional community you gained.
