Treatment for CAS involves careful target selection incorporating sounds that your child can already say and then moving on to incorporating those sounds into highly functional/useful and powerful words that are meaningful to you and your child. We then move into intensive practice using lots of cueing and then decreasing cues as your child improves. I incorporate principles of motor learning, which is a highly research-based method of practice. These principles help to make the skills your child has acquired, become more natural and more automatic in their everyday speech. Once words have been mastered, the SLP and family are constantly adding in new words into the child's repertoire.
Parents are involved in my treatment program by being invited to observe the SLP during all of our therapy sessions. This way, parents are able to be trained in real-time, on the techniques used for cueing, the sequence and hierarchy of cueing so that they are able to get in more practice trials while at home as well. If parents aren't able to attend treatment sessions, they will be provided with video examples of the techniques implemented in therapy, and are provided with a detailed home program. Communication is always open, so if parents have questions, whether in-person, or other modality, they are always welcome and highly encouraged to reach out to me.
I am incredibly excited about incorporating the use of AAC into my practice. For students who struggle significantly with intelligibility, AAC can be a way to supplement communication. Use of AAC does not hinder development of communication skills, but rather reduces the frustrations that come with the challenges of not being understood. For children who use AAC to supplement communication, the SLP provides guidance to parents on how to model on the device or communication board to compose messages. The SLP also assists with brainstorming words that have high-value to the child and making sure those words are accessible, while also targeting the words verbally if they are appropriate for the child's skill level.
